Intel’s Atom Chips To Support Jelly Bean

Intel has confirmed that it’s Atom-based chips will support Android 4.1 a.k.a Jelly Bean.Intel launched it’s Atom based chips on two smartphones —one from Lava and the other from Orange.Both smartphones come with Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread and are yet to receive an update to Ice Cream Sandwich.While Intel is still a newcomer to the mobile SOC market,we are happy to see that it is at least trying to port the latest version of Android to their chips.

An Intel spokesperson confirmed the news in the following statement:


“Intel continues to work closely with Google to enable future versions of Android, including Jelly Bean, on our family of low power Atom processors”.

Intel:Android Still Not Ready For Multi-core Processors

Mike Bell, GM of Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group has said that Android’s thread scheduler was simply not ready for Multi-core processors.He goes on to state that Intel’s internal testing had shown that using a second processor had resulted in a decrease of performance.Intel also claims that SOC(System On A Chip) manufacturers like Qualcomm,Samsung and NVIDIA have not put enough effort in optimizing the thread scheduler of Android with multi-core chips.

Mike Bell also claims that Intel has invested a lot in fixing the thread scheduler of Android.Finally,Bell says that the lack of software implementation by SOC manufacturers was the root cause behind Android’s inability to properly use multi-core chips.

Lava To Bring Intel Based Smartphone XOLO To India

Intel today announced that it was collaborating with Lava to bring “XOLO X900”, which is India’s first smartphone with an Intel processor.The XOLO X900 is based on the reference design given by Intel and packs a Single core 1.6GHz Atom Z2460 processor,4 inch display,NFC ,HDMI connectivity and Gingerbread.The device is expected to be available by the second quarter of this year.

The smartphone delivers a fast application, Web browsing and multitasking experience, and also features two cameras for advanced imaging and video capabilities, including burst mode that allows individuals to capture 10 pictures in under a second with 8-megapixel quality. The smartphone also supports HDMI®, NFC and HD video playback.

As service providers roll out 3G services and connect more cities in India, the smartphone market will grow as more people access the Internet from their phones. The smartphone opportunity in India for 2012 stands at 19.1 million units which is a 78 percent growth year-on-year over 2011, according to Deepak Kumar, research director for Telecommunications and Mobile Phones, IDC India.
